3-D Cover for Dishonorable Death

U. S. Army Rangers fight to stay alive as they come to grips with the truth behind the disappearance of nuclear missiles. ActionTales.com

Make no mistake; this is an action tale. The rules of the ordinary day do not apply. Shortly after the opening scene the rangers are attacked with machine gun fire on the Washington, D.C. freeway. Ordinary rules do not apply. One of the lesser bad guys, Max Harvey, is described thus: "His face looked like it had been through a medium-sized war, with a number of small scars that were partially hidden by a well-trimmed beard."

The author, Bill MacWithey, a career soldier now retired, invites us into Ranger world where we look over the team's collective shoulder as they ply the secrets of the trade--infra red signaling, trailing by perotine, how to avoid tapped phones; all this and much more is revealed. The rangers pull out all the stops--they even call on the resourcefulness of a 12-year-old boy.

Although some scenes take place in Paris, Turkey, and Southeast Asia, the predominant action of Dishonorable Death happens in the USA; and the country is in big trouble. Traitors want to jeopardize national, even world security to satisfy their greed and lust for power.

Unfortunately for the bad guys, along the way they have managed to irk Mitch Davis and the survivors of his U.S. Army ranger team who are the heroes of this tale. The bad guys have hell to pay. Just how far-flung and how high up the chain of command the corruption extends really drives this story--that and the bond forged in battle between the rangers.

At times, the ease in which a life is snubbed in Dishonorable Death disturbed me. However, when all is said and done, this is the kind of book where the good prevail and the bad people get street justice. There is also some humor, some warmth and interesting vignettes along the way. For instance: have you ever wondered how the President of the United States might respond when fat cat industrialists and foreign heads of state try to put the squeeze on him? Bill MacWithey has created a fast-paced world where the rules aren’t all written down in the statute books.

"PAGE-TURNER" ULTRA! Even with a thesaurus to the left of me and a dictionary to the right, I could find no more precise adjectives to describe this novel than this oft-used cliché. Will you enjoy reading this novel? State ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to the following questions and the answer will be obvious:

1) Do you enjoy super-action novels where your focus is speed reading the current page so you can hurry and get to the next one?

2) Can you relate to a military buddies environment where each member would (and does) kill for the others?

3) Are you comfortable with surprises such as the revelation of good guys really being the baddest kind of bad guys and vice versa?

4) Do you actually gloat when a few special ops Rangers outthink, outwit, outfight and outrun entire bad-guy units from the armed services, CIA, FBI, Secret Service and the White House?

‘Yes’ answers will guarantee a really fun read which will engage all of your wits and attention – in trying to figure out the double- and triple-crosses perpetrated by who you were led to believe were the good guys! ‘No’ answers are not relevant. ANYONE who enjoys plots replete with non-stop suspense and action, good vs. evil, buddies protecting each other and assorted fringe characters who appear – and become players in the life and death game which the others are engaged in – will be caught in the intricacies of the multiple plots and never-ending shades of chameleon-like characters.

The book has 33 chapters and when I awoke around 3:30 a.m., I decided to peruse a few pages – perhaps even a chapter or two. At 8:45 a.m. I forced myself to stop reading so I could unwind from remaining in basically the same position for several hours, and to fix breakfast.

After completing the most necessary of life’s necessities, I returned to the novel where I had stopped – Chapter 20 – and continued reading until I reached the last period in the last sentence. I’m a voracious reader but completing 33 chapters before the sun set was a record even for me. There are no boring, long-winded descriptive paragraphs, no meandering to attain a certain word count, and the writer must have had a standing Flow-Chart to which he referred continually, to sustain the many plots which ran parallel, intersected and branched off from each other.

This is an extremely entertaining reading experience and one in which the reader can participate in a myriad of emotions triggered by the imagination of the talented Mr. MacWithey.

Mitch Davis, and his U.S. Army Ranger comrades, have been ambushed in Cambodia while on a MIA mission. Over half their team of 15 has been killed.

After attending the Arlington funeral of Eddie McCain, his commander, Mitch is given a letter written by Eddie to this sister before he went on that last mission. In it, he reveals his suspicions U.S. military officials were setting them up in that ambush.

Mitch and his comrades want revenge. They soon become unnerved to learn they've become entangled in a shadowy world of lies and deceit. Every move they make is known by whomever it is that wants them eliminated. They're getting too close to the truth.

They're not sure who to trust. U. S. senators are being shot by unknown assailants outside their homes, certain CIA agents are acting strangely, 70-plus employees of a nuclear missile plant suddenly disappear, five nuclear missiles are missing, Mafia members are suddenly seen out and about, and Mexican officials are making unheard of demands.

Meanwhile, Mitch and his crew and dodge in and about trying to uncover the truth. Why are so many people trying to kill the remainder of the U.S. Army ranger team to that fateful mission in Cambodia? What is going on? Their search culminates in a dramatic ending. Many lives are forever altered.

In spite of a few verbose sections, the book moves right along. The many subplots within the plot will keep your heart racing to find the next "whodunit!"

Love tales of fast-paced espionage? This book is for you!
