Cover for Gold Lust

Lots of action in this tale. Nolen Martin is partnered with his foster-father, Digger, in prospecting for gold. They find more than they are looking for when Maida Collins starts blasting at them with a shotgun.

They are also in the proximity of a secret research lab that accidentally releases a cloud of toxic gas, forcing the lab personnel to remove all the chemicals. There is suspicion among the lab people that Nolen might be a spy, and efforts are put forth to find out.

And, as they say in the old serials, "Meanwhile, back in town..." T. J. Tower has been told that CMR must strike it rich or else... The 'or else' leaves him little room to manuever so he gives orders to his people to do whatever necessary, legal or otherwise, to find a rich gold vein.

These three forces collide as Gold Lust unfolds, with Nolen in the middle. Talented author Ed Mitchell gives the reader a fast ride with lots of excitement and action. With a touch of the old western, suspense, and romance, Gold Lust will keep you turning pages. Recommended by this reader. Enjoy.

This novel is 282 pages of 'don't-want-to-put-down' action. In analyzing how to section it off, I decided to read in 50 page increments which I approximated would take 5+ hours. With the same anticipation I used to feel while waiting in line to buy a snowball (when I was a child), I made myself comfortable on a Saturday night and began reading. It seemed but a few minutes later when my clock chimed twice - signaling it was two o'clock...not P.M....A.M.! I had 91 pages remaining and I wanted to finish them right then, but the 'eyes' won, and threatened to close whether I was reading or not!

Before reaching the end of the first chapter, I knew that Ed had a winner. Although I usually outline the plot when I review a new book, I think it would be more confusing to the reader to do so with this novel, primarily because the main plot has many tributaries which wind and unwind in every direction of the compass.

Maintaining connecting threads throughout nearly 300 pages of story-telling, is an excellent method by which to judge a talented author. Writing is a skill comparable to acrobats on a trapeze where the audience views only the end result of years of training, practice and occasional errors.

The protagonist, Nolen Martin, is a man of many talents and many skills. He served in the military in covert ops, is technically proficient with most weapons made and seems to be able to meet any challenge and come out on top.

The primary plot involves Nolen stumbling into a rich vein of gold, putting together a consortium, and a very elaborate plan, to search for it, in secret, and to set up an entire mining town with all of the necessities in one area, to locate, mine, sell and transport the gold while thwarting different groups of claim jumpers whose only purpose is to steal the gold - via false documents of who discovered the claim, blackmail, attempts to kill certain controlling individuals and theft.

While overseeing and implementing the plans for this huge endeavor, Nolen also takes time to rescue his foster parents, provide guards to insure both will remain safe when he makes a public announcement about the gold, insure his foster mother, who has been battling cancer for years, gets the best medical treatment available, and calls in specialists to determine why his foster father abruptly went into a coma.

In his 'spare time', Nolen manages to meet and fall in love with the corporate attorney in the company where both work, and offers her a lucrative new position in his mining company.

The story...rather, stories...are well balanced. There is crime, murder, kidnapping, attempts at murder, theft, double-crossing (several times in fact) genuine caring for some who are down on their luck, and a growing affection which is heading toward a deep love and marriage between Nolen and his attorney. Just as in life, the author showcases the good, bad and quite ugly sides of humans, especially when jealousy or greed are catalysts, but there are many humorous and heart-touching scenes. A truly enjoyable book which has 'something for everyone', and the kind of read which triggers a little sadness as you're heading for THE END.

"An adrenaline rush weaving modern gold exploration, spy satellites, gene manipulation, hostile takeovers, and U.S. national security operations, into a tapestry of conflict and suspense."

"This book has everything: corrupt business, military scandal, love story, and searching for gold."

- Lynn Finnell, News Anchor, KION Ch-46 TV

Highly Recommended. Tense and absorbing is this multi-faceted thriller which opens with an account of an aging prospector's relationship with a foster son and quickly moves into the behind-the scenes politics and concerns of a ruthless international conglomerate suddenly interested in gold. A new, rich vein of gold may change the shape of the region and affect a restricted, secret military area in this fine story. Many plots and sub-plots are hatched with all the potential of becoming confusing, but deftly handled by Mitchell with a powerful dose of strong characters to make the reader care about the unexpected conclusion.

I found Gold Lust to be an adventure novel wrapped in a thrilling mystery with excitement, gore, and romance. It was pure enjoyment to read. I could hardly wait to pick up the book again to see what was going to happen next. Ed Mitchell's first book is a real winner. I do believe we have a brand new hit author. The story has its good guys, bad guys, and even bad good guys. It is a thrilling adventure of finding a gold strike, and trying to hang onto it by outsmarting the bad guys. Every chapter brings a new twist to the story, and what makes it a very good novel, is that I could not guess what was going to happen. I had to read the next chapter.

- Northwest Mineral Prospectors Gazette

"Just finished the book last night. If I had to choose one word that would describe the book it would be 'Fabulous'. The more I read, the more I felt the pain and success of Nolen Martin. My question is, when are you going to do another book?"

- Dave Kyzer, President,
   Minnesota Gold Prospecting Assoc.

"I did not put the book down for two days. I highly resented things such as fixing dinner, answering the door, washing clothes, etc. I wanted everybody to just leave me alone so I could read!!! I was right there with the characters from chapter to chapter!! Step down Sidney Sheldon, Nora Roberts, Sue Grafton and John Grissom and bow to ED MITCHELL."

"This is a great book! It's done in the best "Clancy" tradition, but even more so! You've out Clancy'ed, Clancy. I'm heading for the hills to find my gold."

- Steve Schramm, Proposal Consultant

"I started reading your book when I got home Saturday night, my wife got up early on Sunday and started reading it. She refused to give it back until she finished it. She loved it, I am half way through and am loving it also."
